Now that the summertime has finally arrived it’s time to defend your eyes from the sun and other warm weather dangers.
Here are some tips to keep your eyes safe in the sun:
Make sure your glasses have 100% protection from UV rays. If your sunglasses don’t protect against 100% of UV rays, they may be causing more harm than good. Not to fear, sufficient UV protection doesn’t have to cost more – many cheaper options offer full UV blockage.
Opt for larger sunglasses. In the realm of UV defense, think big. Try to opt for glasses with wide lenses and wraparound frames.
Wear a wide brimmed hat or visor. A hat with a wide brim will add an extra layer of defense against the sun’s rays.
Sport sunglasses on overcast days. Even when the sun is hiding behind the clouds, UV can still reach your eyes and cause harm. Don’t be fooled by a cloudy day.
Invest in a proper sunglasses case. Sunglasses can easily be scratched, broken or lost. It’s worthwhile to store them in a closed case to keep them free from scratches, breaks and dirt.
Keep hydrated. It’s important to keep your eyes hydrated. Drink a minimum of 2 liters of water a day to prevent dehydrated eyes and skin.
Stay away from midday sun. Stay inside when possible especially in the late morning and afternoon when the sun is at its strongest and the highest levels of UV are in the atmosphere.
Consider purchasing polarized lenses. Polarized lenses reduce the glare from reflective surfaces such as water. Perfect for a day at the beach or pool, they provide more comfort during outdoor activities.
Wear swimming goggles to keep bacteria and chemicals in the water from entering your eyes. Make sure the goggles provide UV protection UV resistant as well, since the sun’s rays reflect off water and can increase exposure to UV.
Make sure you don’t apply sunblock too close to the eyes or eyelids as it can enter the eye and cause irritation.
